Uncomfortable: Day 1

Theme: Trusting God can feel uncomfortable, especially when He asks us to step beyond what feels familiar or secure. Yet when we learn to meet that discomfort with faith, we open the door to deeper trust and greater dependence on what God wants to do in every situation.
In 2 Kings 4:1–7, we meet a woman whose life has become deeply uncomfortable. She is a widow with two sons, no visible means of support, and a debt hanging over her family. In that day, there were no charitable organizations to offer assistance, and the lawful way to settle the debt was for her sons to be taken as slaves. It was an uncomfortable situation, to say the least.
So, what do you do when life gets uncomfortable? This woman made the right move first: she cried out to the prophet Elisha. In reality, she was crying out to God. Elisha was God’s representative, and she turned to the one man she believed could help. Today, the Bible tells us that Jesus is our representative before God: “Therefore, he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:25). Not only does Jesus intercede for us, but He has also given us the Holy Spirit, who lives in every believer and intercedes on our behalf according to God’s will (Romans 8:27).
When life gets uncomfortable, where do you turn first? Many of us look everywhere else before we look to God. He often becomes our last resort instead of our first response. This week, let’s begin taking intentional steps to make God our first priority—not only when life becomes difficult, but before the discomfort ever comes.

 1 The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” 2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.” 3 Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” 5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing. 7 She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

Lord, when life becomes uncomfortable, teach me to turn to You first. Help me remember that You see my situation, You hear my cry, and You are able to provide what I need. Strengthen my faith to trust You before I understand the answer and guide me to depend on You as my first response rather than my last resort. In Jesus’ name, amen.
